ColegauCymru has today welcomed the Welsh Government announcement confirming the provision of additional funding to support learners in colleges and sixth forms across Wales. The additional finance forms part of a total of £24m which will be made available to help those who have felt the impact of the Covid19 pandemic the most.
The funding will be used to support learners in exam years and post-16 students transitioning into the next stage of education or employment, and for activities such as open days and taster sessions for vocational careers. It will also be used to provide additional support for learners from the most disadvantaged backgrounds, and those who have disengaged from learning.
We are grateful to the Minister for Education and Welsh Language, who continues to recognise the importance of education and the ongoing disruption faced by our young people.
ColegauCymru Chief Executive Iestyn Davies said,
“With the arrival of the Omicron variant, and the uncertainty which accompanies it, this injection of funding has been welcomed by our member colleges.
It is essential that we support our disadvantaged and vulnerable learners and those facing examinations and assessments to give them the best possible opportunities to succeed.”
The further education sector is committed to supporting all learners as we continue to navigate this challenging time and will work closely with Welsh Government colleagues and stakeholders to ensure this.
