Coleg Gwent photography, art and media learners capture stunning images on Erasmus+ visit to Tenerife

Coleg Gwent’s recent visit to Tenerife courtesy of the Erasmus+ programme provided learners with the opportunity to develop not only their photography skills but to travel and experience the culture of a different country.

Erasmus+ is the EU’s programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. International mobility programmes have long been recognised as vital in providing learners and staff alike with the chance to experience visits they may not otherwise be able to access.

The Canary Island of Tenerife was the perfect setting for a range of photography opportunities. The learners were able to use new techniques to capture the picturesque and vast landscapes, which in turn inspired them to consider what they’d like to focus on in their future careers.

The confidence that this visit abroad provided was evident when chatting to those who took part, with one learner noting that he’d developed as a person and felt the experience had also helped to bring the group together and forge new friendships.

A particular highlight included a night-time photography session at the top of Mount Teide National Park where the learners were taught how to take still images of the stars as the earth rotates. The patience and eye for finding the correct moment was a steep learning curve for the Torfaen Learning Zone group but one which will have helped them to further their skills immensely. There was also plenty of time to unwind with tales of snorkelling, hiking and exploring the island from a catamaran!

Speaking to the students, ColegauCymru International Project Manager Siân Holleran, said,

“It’s so refreshing to see how many of you were brought together by this Erasmus+ visit. I hope that your experience will go on to inspire others to grasp these opportunities in the future. It’s clear to see how much you have all gained from this trip which is why it’s so important for us to encourage learners to take part in international mobilities programmes.”
