Today the Welsh Government published its Final Budget for 2025/26.

ColegauCymru Chief Executive, David Hagendyk, said,

“We welcome today’s Final Budget announcement from the Welsh Government but it will be another challenging financial year for colleges as the number of learners in the sector continues to grow. Colleges are already delivering across Welsh Government’s priorities, in particular supporting green jobs and growth, and are ready to do more but a long-term commitment to sustainable growth in funding is needed.

We welcome the pilot scheme for young people aged 21 and under to pay only £1 for a single bus fare in Wales. This demonstrates the Welsh Government’s recognition of the increasing pressure on colleges both in terms of transporting learners to college and also, where required, to work placements that are part of a programme of study. This is a positive move to ensure more learners can travel by bus to college but colleges will need to consider the detail to understand the full impact on learners.

Whilst we recognise that the Welsh Government is in a challenging position financially, support for post-16 education and apprenticeships has never been more important. Further education and apprenticeships are vital to Wales’ economic recovery, and with strong links to industry, these pathways will help to deliver the skills necessary for learners to embark on successful careers.

Investing in our learners, employers and communities is vital for creating a pool of talent for today and for future generations.”
