Today, the Welsh Government published its final budget for 2024/25. Responding to the budget, Chief Executive of ColegauCymru, David Hagendyk said,
“We are pleased that the Welsh Government has recognised the importance of apprenticeships, and how they support wider policy aims, and we welcome the return of £5.25million into the apprenticeships funding pot. It remains an incredibly challenging financial period for colleges, and the loss of European funding to support the apprenticeships programme will have a significant impact on learners, communities and colleges.
It is essential that the Welsh Government makes long term commitments to college funding – for both apprenticeships and further education, to ensure the sector can deliver for learners and employers for today’s and future generations. As Wales navigates turbulent economic times, colleges are the skills engine needed to drive our economic recovery, and we must ensure that colleges receive the sustainable funding that they need to support learners and deliver for employers. Further education and apprenticeships are central to a fairer, greener, and stronger Wales”.
