ColegauCymru has today congratulated Dame Professor Julie Lydon and Professor David Sweeney on their appointments to key positions in the newly formed Commission for Tertiary Education and Research.

Following a pre-appointment hearing that took place at a meeting of the Senedd’s Children, Young People and Education Committee on 15 December, Dame Professor Julie Lydon will take up the role of Chair of the Board. Professor David Sweeney will Chair the Research and Innovation Committee and whilst also taking on the role of Deputy Chair.

ColegauCymru Chair Guy Lacey, said,

“The FE sector extends its congratulations to both Julie and David on their appointments.

“We have said from day one that it is vital that those leading the new Commission understand the needs of further education and recognise the diversity of learners we support and the communities we serve. Over the last decade we have built a positive and constructive relationship with Welsh Government. The days of FE in Wales feeling like a Cinderella service are in the past and it is vital that the new Commission continues this work.”

“While their expertise and experience sits firmly in the higher education sector, we look to forward to working with them to ensure the needs of all learners in further education are met and that we can achieve our common vision of a world-class post-16 sector.”
