ColegauCymru and the further education sector were sad to hear of the sudden loss of Gareth Pierce, former Chief Executive of WJEC and current Chair of Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.
During a successful career which included time as a statistician in the health and housing sectors, teaching mathematics in a South Wales comprehensive school, lecturing in a business school, and tutoring for the Open University, Gareth will be primarily remembered for his significant contribution to the education sector in Wales.
ColegauCymru Chair and CEO/Principal of Coleg Gwent, Guy Lacey said,
“We send our condolences to Gareth’s family and friends at what must be a very difficult time. We recognise the major role Gareth played in education in Wales during a period of substantial change, and are grateful for this.”
CEO and Principal of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, Dafydd Evans added,
“Amongst his many achievements, Gareth’s contribution to education and the Welsh language must be recognised. While his passing is a loss to Welsh society, his work on emphasising the importance of the Welsh language across the education sector will form a major part of his legacy over the years and decades ahead.”
