ColegauCymru and the further education sector are saddened to hear of the recent passing of former St David’s Catholic Sixth Form College Principal, Mark Leighfield. Mark was held in the highest regard by his colleagues at St. David’s Catholic College and across the sector. His dedication to education and his commitment to learners were truly inspiring. This loss is devastating for the entire team at St. David’s, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Mark joined St David’s Catholic College as a teacher of Economics and Business Studies in 1987, having gained a first-class BA (Hons) in Economics and a PGCE from Cardiff University, and an MSc in Economics and Social History from the London School of Economics. He went on to hold the positions of Head of Economics, Head of the Faculty of IT and Business Studies, and Director of Curriculum and Deputy Principal, before progressing to the role of Principal in 2004.

Mark also held several non-executive roles and was a member of the 14-19 Executive for England and Wales at the Catholic Education Service and was a ColegauCymru Board member.

For a period, Mark was seconded to Welsh Government to lead the development and delivery of the 14-19 Learning Pathways Policy, developing statutory guidance and regulations. Mark worked across a range of education sectors and was a Lay member of Cardiff University’s Governing Council, a Secondary School Governor, and a member of a Joint Governance Committee for collaborative work with Coleg Y Cymoedd.

ColegauCymru Chair, Lisa Thomas, said,

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Mark's family, friends, and colleagues. Mark will be remembered for his kindness, his commitment to education, and the positive impact he had on so many lives.”

ColegauCymru Chief Executive, David Hagendyk, added,

“Mark's contributions to education extended far beyond the walls of St. David’s College. He played a pivotal role in leading 14-19 pathways, shaping the future of countless learners. His kindness and dedication left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of working with him.”
