ColegauCymru was pleased to hold the first in-person “Power Up” Weight-lifting competition at Coleg Sir Gâr on 5 June 2024.

This first in person event, supported by Welsh Weightlifting, saw learners from Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg y Cymoedd come together to compete with various weights and lifts.

ColegauCymru Active Wellbeing and Sport Project Manager, Rob Baynham, said,

“Power Up FE is designed to provide college learners with an opportunity to compete in a strength-based challenge whilst developing better technique in the process. It was great to see the first face to face event involve so many participants new to the sport of Weightlifting competing alongside more established lifters.”

Weightlifting is a growth sport, particularly for women and girls, with events such as these giving learners the opportunity to try something new and expose them to top level coaching in the process.

ColegauCymru is grateful to Weightlifting Wales and Llanelli Weightlifting Academy for supporting the event and for holding a pre-competition workshop, sharing advice and insight on technique for competition. Weightlifting Wales promotes health, well-being and fitness through strength training, which closely aligns with the ColegauCymru Active Wellbeing Strategy.

Coleg Sir Gâr Sports Lecturer, Stephen Williams, added,

“Following a virtual competition during the Covid19 lockdown, it was great to see college learners and athletes coming together to complete face to face. We’re looking forward to establishing weightlifting on the college sports calendar in Wales, as lifting and strength and conditioning programmes and the sport of weightlifting itself continue to grow.”

Rob further added,

“We look forward to the competition becoming a regular fixture in the FE calendar, with plans to expand to other regional events. Thanks to Welsh Weightlifting for technical support and Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig Campus for hosting us at their amazing new facility, The Foundry.”
