ColegauCymru was pleased to host the first successful Rhyl Multisport event last week. The inclusive day provided opportunities for FE learners and staff from colleges across North Wales to participate at a range of levels.

The event, the first of its kind in North Wales, took place at Marsh Tracks on 2 October 2023 and saw over 100 learners taking part from across the  Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and Coleg Cambria campuses.

With a wide range of learners taking part, including Independent Living Skills (ILS) learners and those studying public services and health and social care qualifications, the event format supports a fully inclusive approach where learners and staff can participate at whatever level presents them with a suitable challenge. We were delighted to see approximately 20% of learners who took part had additional learning needs – demonstrating the inclusive nature of the event.

This was a fantastic opportunity for learners and staff to exercise together, and in some cases try out a completely new activity. It was also great to see event staff supported by learners from public service courses taking up roles as marshals, and gaining valuable volunteering experience in the process.

ColegauCymru Active Wellbeing and Sport Project Manager Rob Baynham said,

"The success of this event is built around an offer that is suitable for all levels of activity and fully inclusive in its nature. There continues to be a need to engage with those less active learners on the value of physical activity. The evidence tells us that developing positive social and emotional habits for this age group, including taking regular exercise, contributes to better mental well-being. More events of this nature will also help to create a better understanding of the value of active wellbeing across the sector."

We’re grateful for the support of our sponsors, event staff, college staff and learners, who all played a big part in making the event a success, and we thank you for your contributions.
